Changes to Company Accounts: What You Need to Know

Big changes are coming to how UK companies file their accounts – and they’ll apply to all companies from 1 April 2027. Companies House is making these updates to improve transparency and help combat economic crime. If you run a limited company, now’s a good time to get ahead of what’s coming.

Here’s a clear and simple breakdown of the upcoming changes and what they mean for you.

What’s changing

1. All accounts must be filed digitally

From April 2027, you’ll no longer be able to file accounts by post or by uploading a PDF. Everything must be filed using fully digital software that works directly with Companies House systems.

What this means: If you’re still submitting paper accounts or PDFs, you’ll need to switch to proper filing software before the deadline.

2. More detail required from small and micro-entities

Small and micro companies will need to file both a profit and loss account and a director’s report. Currently, many small companies file ‘abridged’ or ‘filleted’ accounts that exclude this information – but this will no longer be allowed.

What this means: Even if you’re a one-person limited company, you’ll be expected to provide a fuller picture of your business’s finances.

3. Companies House will carry out more checks

There will be tighter checks on the data submitted in your accounts. This is part of a wider plan to reduce fraud and improve the accuracy of information held on the register.

What this means: It’s going to be even more important to ensure your accounts are accurate and submitted correctly.
